Working memory network sequences and neuropathological dynamics

Persistent activation of neuronal populations in recurrent networks of cortico-cortical connections has been implicated as the substrate of working memory.   In addition to persistent activation of neuronal populations, temporal patterns of activity which repeat above chance levels in the brain have been reported experimentally, and this is thought to subserve functions such as movement, speech and rhythms.   A biologically plausible model of working memory is presented incorporating densely interconnected excitatory neurons and asymmetric Hebbian plasticity which reproduces the persistent activity of neuronal populations observed during working memory in the cortex.  The model is also capable of learning and reproducing complex sequence activity from external stimuli with implications for working memory oscillations and rhythm generation.    It will then be examined how specific changes in the architecture or parameters of the working memory network (e.g. reductions in network inhibition) lead to dynamics which may be associated with different neuropathologies including epilepsy, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorders.  It will be shown how these different pathological dynamics may arise from similar or the same mechanisms acting in the recurrent working memory networks.
